John Meredith
I have lived in Beaconsfield for the last 33 years. I was educated at King’s College, Cambridge and the Harvard Business School and spent 41 years with BOAC and British Airways. I was General Manager for The Americas, responsible for the profitability of the routes from UK to Canada, USA, Caribbean and Latin America, and General Manager for Africa, the Caribbean and Latin America. I set up the Air Transport Action Group to fight congestion and lack of infrastructure. I am a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society and the Chartered Institute of Transport, a Liveryman of the Guild of Air Pilots and Air Navigators and a Freeman of the City of London. I am also co-Vice Chairman of the Bermuda Society.
Since my retirement in 1999 I have become closely involved in the local community and from 2004-2007 was Chairman of the Beaconsfield Independent Electors Association. I was President of the Beaconsfield Rotary Club in 2007-2008 and worked with the Beaconsfield Campaign Group to promote sustainable development and am currently a Committee Member of the Beaconsfield Society.
I believe that national party politics should not be involved at the local level and therefore believe in the importance of independent representatives. My main concerns are focused on ensuring that Beaconsfield preserves a healthy and attractive environment, and that further development does not put pressure on the transport infrastructure of the town. More specifically, I wish to improve the cleanliness of our town and to ensure that public toilets are not closed, to ensure that the parking problems in the old town are discussed and agreed with local residents. I am opposed to the proposal to build a large incinerator in or close to the town and nor do I think that telephone masts should intrude on the visual environment. Finally, I am keen to maintain the momentum for the improvement of financial procedures in Beaconsfield Council, spearheaded by Independent Councillors.
