Shirley Scrivener

I have lived in Beaconsfield since 1956 first in Heath Road and then in Burgess Wood Grove. I have been deeply interested and involved in all aspects of Beaconsfield life ever since my work with Holtspur Playgroup when my children were small and I have always thought that the Independent party was the organisation most able to serve the wishes of the people of Beaconsfield without interference from national politicians of any party.

I was a member of the Beaconsfield Ratepayers Association from its inception by Alastair Dyer and others in Holtspur in the late fifties. In 1983 I stood for election in the West Ward as an Independent. I then served on the Town Council for twelve years becoming chairman of Planning, deputy Mayor and then Mayor in1989-90.

While on the Council I was a school governor at Butlers Court for nine years becoming chairman for two years before I retired from the Town Council in 1995. I was also a member of the Beaconsfield Trees and Town Group who over the years were responsible for most of the daffodil planting seen around the town as well as always fighting for the planting of new and replacement of dead trees within the street scene. The group, of which I was chairman for four years also managed to persuade the County and District Councils to allow hanging baskets-only a few at first but the beginnings of the flowering of Beaconsfield as it is now. Because of the increasing age of the members and a lack of recruitment this group was eventually amalgamated with the Beaconsfield Society on whose committee I served for four years.

Since leaving the Town Council I still have connections through being asked to be the Reserve Coordinator of the Holtspur Bank Local Nature Reserve which I enjoy along with my role as chairman of the Friends of Holtspur Bank.

I was deeply honoured, upon my retirement from the Town Council, to be asked to become the President of the Independents- a role which has enabled me to keep up my interest with local affairs while not having the heavy commitments of a Councillor.
